Abington United 2 : 1 Thaxted Rangers
Thaxted went down to a late winner from relegation-threatened Abington at the weekend.
The visitors had been the dominant side in the first half , with Abington rarely threatening stand in keeper Simon Jiggins’ goal.
Despite, not playing at their best Thaxted were in control and Charlie Daniels was causing the Abington defence concern with his pace. After 25 minutes, this pace eventually told and Charlie outstripped the defence and slipped the ball under the oncoming keeper, so 1-0 at the break.
The second half saw Abington come at Thaxted and their tenacity was rewarded on the hour with the equaliser.
Thaxted did respond well to this and began to create chances, the best falling to Shane Vince who was unable to convert with a header from close range.
As the game wore on it was the home side who looked the more likely and in the closing stages it was Abington who showed the greater desire to go and get the winner.
Thaxted gave the ball away cheaply in midfield and despite a number of opportunities for Thaxted to challenge, the Abington winger strode into a threatening position and threaded the ball through to the onrushing Abington striker to stab home.
There was no time for Thaxted to respond and for the third year in a row, Thaxted return from Abington empty handed.
Thaxted will look to get back on track this weekend with a visit to City Life in Cambridge, whom they beat 4-0 earlier in the season.
