Cambourne Rovers 1 : 1 Thaxted Rangers
Thaxted travelled to Cambourne on Saturday, October 3rd, expecting a tough game but also knowing that a win would put them top of the league.
As is becoming customary, Thaxted were very quick out of the blocks and scored what is certainly the fastest goal I have ever witnessed in the Cambs League.
Charlie Daniels cut in from the left, put the ball in the area, Tom Clark had an attempt thwarted and then a scramble ensued which resulted in Grouty nodding the ball home, there could have barely been 30 seconds on the clock!
Thaxted went for the jugular, Tom Clark had an effort crash back off of the bar, then Shane Vince had a header brilliantly saved by the Cambourne keeper.
Thaxted continued to press, but the elusive second goal wouldn't come. As the game began to settle, Cambourne's extra man in the middle of the park started to tell.
On the half hour mark Thaxted were beginning to come under pressure. A tactical change ensued to match up, but didn't have time to bed in before Cambourne equalised when a pull back from the right was fired home.
The latter part of the 1st half, saw Thaxted begin to regain the advantage.
The second half was a tight affair, with Thaxted having the edge. The closest Cambourne came was when Ashley King was disposed and Kevin Wyndham-Smith dived at the keepers feet to make an excellent stop.
Apart from that, Kev didn't really have a shot to save as a patched up Thaxted defence with Mark Williams going off injured and Ashley King covering as an emergency centre half stood firm.
As the game wore on it was the visitors who seemed the more intent to go for all 3 points and Tom Clark had a good chance to clinch the points when 1 on 1 with the keeper and Jamie Hansen came close with an excellent effort which went narrowly wide.
Thaxted will feel they may have deserved more than a point, but with a number of key personnel missing not a bad point.
