Classic Music
Uttlesforde Orchestra

The Uttlesforde Orchestra is based around Saffron Walden in the district of Uttlesford.

Our purpose is to provide performance opportunities for talented musicians living or working in the district and to promote the appreciation of music in the wider community through the presentation of public concerts and community based projects.

Uttlesforde Orchestra was so-named long before local government changes created the Uttlesford District Council. Its name is taken from the Old Uttlesforde Hundred, 'hundred' being the name for the Saxon administrative unit into which counties in the south of England were divided, hence the use of the original spelling of Uttlesforde which appears on most of the older maps of the area.

The players are from all walks of life - some are still at school, while some of the older ones are seasoned troubadours! They generously

give their time and talent for charitable causes and have performed in many of England's great country houses, including Audley End Mansion.

The Orchestra's repertoire has included operas by composers such as Mozart and Rossini as well as more modern works by Dame Ethel Smythe and Lennox Berkeley. Their first visit overseas was in 1987 when they went to play in Bad Wildungen in Germany as part of Saffron Walden's Town Twinning celebration.
